I thought I’d give you a little roundup on how we manage the digital photographs taken in our household, maybe it is interesting for you. It’s also a good opportunity to link all my gadget theme pages!

- pics and movies are retrieved from our camera’s (e.g. Nikon 8800  ) to both my computer(s) and the computer of my wife via usb or pcmcia memory card interface

- they are then stored on the Synology NAS   in the /photo share (2 terabyte), the NAS run in RAID so even if a harddisk fails I just put a new HD in

- my wife can work on her computer and use Google Picasa, order prints via Picasa, make web albums via Picasa and e-mail new pics via Picasa.

- I can use my own tooling on the same /photo’s and e.g. upload some to Flickr or my weblog or add them to my PDA  .

- Via the XBox   or the KISS Player  , the photo collection is displayable on our TV, with all kinds of options (random image from the past years photoshow is fun with some music on the X-Box when visitors are coming by to run in the background)

- On the NAS I run the automated FTP script to synchronize with my hosting account at MediaTemple. This happens automatically overnight so even when we accidentally press DELETE on a gallery or the complete city is nuked, ALL photographs ever taken since 2002 are stored safely there

- And while we have it as storage location on the MediaTemple account we have also added a Zen-Photo web frontend so that externals can view the photo galleries (password protected) e.g. grandmother wants to see the new pics of Maarten and the bbq  .

- Via the Zen Photo WordPress plugin my wife and me can select pictures from the Zen Photo album to add them to e.g. the weblog of Maarten so that we don’t have to duplicate content and can link directly to galleries.

Any comments/suggestions?

One of the reasons I bought a NAS was to have a nice safe place to put my digital photo’s on. Previously I had to store them on lots of CD’s which eventually will become unreadable and which are basically put away in a box to never be seen again.

The Synology NAS creates a default photo share: /volume1/photo.

Under there I have created directories per year. And in each year directory I have created sub albums.

Quite useful since my wife can access the share too from her laptop. She runs Google Picasa to organize the pictures and "maintain and communicate them". Furthermore the media server displays them on my X-Box and via a little linux utility I can view them on my KISS Player.

The NAS runs under RAID so in case a HD crashes I will be safe. However if someone would delete all pics or if the house burns down the photos would be gone.

So I began uploading the photos to Flickr for safety and got myself a pro account. I felt however that since I DO have the webspace I would like to have some more control over the images and have them "nearer". Furthermore I would like to FTP them also AND I would like to place the movies I make with the same Nikon camera also there.

So I installed Zen Photo Album which holds all my digital images, including a nice WordPress integration. It will probably enable me in the long run to do "more".

The problem now was to sync the photo share in my LAN to my Zen Photo album with my hosting company (MediaTemple).

After a quick look around I settled for the open source util lftp and made the following script which I can cron on my Synology box:

This script is something I wrote just now and it syncs my photo share with my Zen Photo Album dir. The only problem is now that it creates a directory "photo" under the album dir, so the root will be "photo" (whatever), apart from this it runs beautifully.

Flickr Camera Search 3 shows me that the 10 megapixel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI 0 is on its way to become the most popular camera of the moment. While my 8 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8800 is slowly on a return (read how happy I was when I bought it, 12 okt 2004  ).

Within flickr 322,357 photo’s were shot with the Nikon Coolpix 8800 and it’s now ranked as #37 of the #51 nikon camera’s 0. 

I’m a Nikon guy and not a Canon guy so I started looking at the specs of the Nikon D80 because I don’t like to own a camera that’s  at spot #37 (even though firmware update 1.7   improved some things).

The specs of the D80 1 look amazing although I’m a bit doubtful to go to DSLR. It costs approx. €1000 what is about the same I paid for the Nikon 8800.  On ebay the 8800 sells for $777. between €400 and €500 euro. That would mean if I would sell the 8800 and from the money buy the D80 it would cost me about €600 all together.

Obviously… then I have to start buying new lenses and memory cards…

Zojuist mijn eerste 360 graden panorama foto (je kent ze wel) gemaakt o.a. met behulp van panoramamaker   … van de woonkamer. Er ligt een beetje veel troep op de tafel, dus ik zal je deze eerste opname besparen. Is wel leuk, bij het eerstvolgende feestje ga ik een 360 graden foto maken van de happening of uh…van het interieur van mijn focus lol. Eigenlijk moet ik dan wel nog officieel een statief en waterpas kopen…hmmm…Wel grappig, als ik straks ons maisonnetje ga verkopen ga ik van elke ruimte zo’n foto maken, grappig. Het handige van de Nikon 8800 is dat je op de panorama scene stand een deel van de vorige foto transparant ziet bij de volgende shot (naar keuze links, rechts, onder of boven), zodat je ze perfect kunt overlappen, het ging natuurlijk ook wel met mijn oude digitale camera maar nu is het zo eenvoudig dat het gewoon klikken en drag en droppen is (ok en 2 keer next), de panorama foto’s worden namelijk in een apart mapje gestopt op het geheugenkaartje. Lijkt me ook wel gaaf om van die dingen te maken bij evenementen zoals de vierdaagse e.d.. Ik zal er binnenkort een posten. Een aantal willekeurige van het web geplukt:

Ik zie zelf bedrijven die een deel van hun webdesign businessplan op 360 graden fotos / ipix hebben gebaseerd (125 euro per stuk!!!!) (bijvoorbeeld 1   of 2   of 3  ), bij even doorzoeken zie ik echt duizenden bedrijven wereldwijd die dit gedaan hebben, djeez. idee!

De volgende stap is natuurlijk een 8mm fisheye lens kopen (er bestaan zelf 360 graden fish eye lenzen) en dan echte ipix movies maken ipv louter quicktime VR movies, want nu is het natuurlijk slechts van links naar rechts, hier 1 of hier   meer info.

Ik heb hem dus he, de absoluut gloedje gloedje nieuwe Nikon Coolpix 8800  , vanmiddag gescoord bij de Mediamarkt in Herzogenrath (2 uur heen en 2 uur terug, gelukkig met the best of AC/DC op 15) voor 999 euro inclusief 1 gigabyte CF kaartje (daar moest ik wel naar vragen want die hadden ze al bij mijn drie voorgangers vergeten), ik had het laatste exemplaar laten reserveren rechtstreeks van de Photokina 2004 0. De camera is zelfs zo nieuw (press release op 16 september) dat zelfs dpreview   alleen nog maar een preproduction exemplaar heeft kunnen reviewen.

Er zijn zo veel reviews 0 over te vinden dat ik de achtergronden aan de surfer overlaat. In het kort: dit is de camera waar de digital camera experts en reviewers een instante erectie van krijgen. De camera waar velen al tijden naar uitzien. Dit is de creme de la creme van de prosumer camera’s. De BMW Z4 met volledige 100% optieset temidden van de Opel Astra’s. Ik heb hem al een uur liefkozend vast en wil hem eigenlijk niet loslaten, hij ziet er ook zoooo mooi uit. Dit is het Nikon vlaggenschip onder de digitale camera’s, ze hebben er werkelijk alle laatste snufjes en ergenomische schoonheid ingestopt. Jarenlange ervaring die cumuleert in dit apparaat. De eerste en enige digitale 8.31 miljoen pixel camera met 10x optische zoom (en daarnaast nog vele malen digitale zoom). De eerste digitale camera die gebruik maakt van de Nikon’s nieuwe Vibration Reduction (VR) techniek die om de lens is heen gebouwd. USB 2.0 koppeling, infrarode afstandbediening, een LCD scherm dat je 360 graden kunt draaien onafhankelijk van de camera stand, supersnelle opstarttijd, een nieuwe accu die 8.5 uur lang meegaat in operation modus (dat was bij mijn vorige camera wel anders), niet zomaar een rode ogen reductie systeem maar een totaal vernieuwd advanced red eye reduction system dat werkt van voor tot achter: nooit meer rode ogen, een EVF (electronic View Finder) die voor het eerst ook gebruik kan worden als je een bril draagt (zoals mij) omdat er een handig rubberen kapje op zit, filmpjes opnemen op full-screen inclusief audio, audio opnames maken bij per foto die je maakt, enz.., enz..,enz…

Op onze vakantie in Indonesie ging de camera (non digitaal) van Esmee stuk (iets met de Schneider-Kreuznach lens mechaniek) tegelijkertijd merkte ik dat ik toch een aantal zaken mistte op mijn nikon coolpix 775  , de kwaliteit van de foto’s is veruit perfect (volgens mijn vader scherper dan zijn Canon 4 mega pixel camera) maar vooral zaken in het gebruik die ik beter wilde. Dat gecombineerd was het besluit dan ook om een nieuwe camera aan te schaffen die we dan allebei konden gebruiken. Fotograferen is een grote hobby van Esmee (vooral op al haar reizen) en ik vindt het ook steeds interessanter, we hadden dus een lijst van checkpoint waaraan de nieuwe camera moest voldoen: voldoende resolutie om ook grote afdrukken te kunnen maken (vooral leuk bij de foto’s van ons neefje en nichtje), snellere opstarttijd (begon te irriteren telkens 3 seconden wachten), langere batterij levensduur (mijn camera was rond 1500 na een dag kiekjes maken “op”), hogere zoom (ook handig op Esmee’s safari’s), filmpjes met geluid (beetje raar die doofstomme mini filmpjes), hij moest goed draagbaar zijn dus niet veel grote dan mijn coolpix 775 (die ik mijn broekzak kon stoppen), rode ogen reductie, meer flits bereik (de 8800 heeft 6 meter flits bereik!) en nog wat zaken anyhow de 8800 vervult alle wensen.

Zaken die ik tot nu toe ontdekt heb:
* de AF Assisit illuminator, een erg coole optie: als er erg weinig licht is en je drukt de “shutter-release” button half in dan straalt hij een rood licht uit (alsof je een infrarode beam bovenop een riflegun) waardoor hij toch nog kan focussen ook als is het onderwerp niet verlicht
* het deleten van foto’s gaat nu erg snel en eenvoudig i.t.t. tot de 775
* je kunt time-lapse movies maken: zoals een zonsondergang waardoor je de zon ziet zinken (bij de Tanah Lot tempel in Bali heb ik echter 200 foto’s achter elkaar gemaakt, scheelt toch)
* een panorama assist setting waardoor je bij foto2 transparant de rand van foto1 ziet zodat je die exact eroverheen kan leggen, je krijgt er software bij de panorama foto’s aan elkaar “naait”, ideaal voor al die prachtige landschappen die je normaal nooit op de foto krijgt.
* er zijn meerdere manieren om door de menu’s heen te springen, i.p.v. het scene select modus (portrait, party, night portrait etc..) te gebruiken kun je ook de “func” button indrukken en dan de command dial draaien. Volgens vele reviewers heeft Nikon tegenover eerdere camera’s erg veel geleerd over de plaatsing van alle knopjes en dials, en dat klopt, met mijn oog op de EVF zitten mijn vingers precies op de juiste plaatsen, op de EVF zie ik vervolgens, net zoals een straaljagerpiloot de gegevens die ik wil zien gedisplayed.
* Van de scene opties zijn de volgende opvallend nieuw ten opzicht van mijn eenvoudige 775: “beach” (kijk….die had ik moeten hebben), “night landscape” (met een erg lage shutter speed en noise reduction die automatisch aanspringt)(die had ik moeten hebben op de heuvels boven Bandung), “close up” die deze keer tot 3 cm (!!!) kan scherpstellen, “museum” : ook erg handig, vaak zie je in museums bordjes als “geen flash gebruiken”, deze optie stelt de camera gelijk zo in met nog wat toeters en bellen zoals de BSS ( best shot selection) die automatisch aanspringt en “copy” : die had ik ook moeten hebben, vaak zie je bij de ingang van parken of musea een groot bord met de naam of een plattegrond, die komt altijd wat wazig over, met deze optie zorgt de camera voor haarscherpe foto’s van tekst en tekeningen.
* er is een aparte dial modus om snel de kwaliteit in te stellen (basic, normal, fine, extra) = jpg, (hi) = tif, (raw) = nef en de resolutie die uiteindelijk oploopt tot 3264×2448 pixels (28×21 cm afdruk is dan haarscherp), gaat retesnel, voor mijn weblog pics dus wat lager instellen en voor Esmee’s vakantie foto’s wat hoger en voor de kinder foto’s erg hoog :), qua grootte op je geheugenkaartje maakt dat dus uit. Op de aller aller hoogste stand (hi en hoogste resolutie) is een foto 23mb groot. Je maakt dan dus 40 foto’s op een 1 gigabyte kaartje (gelukkig heb ik er 2 lol) (wellicht nog een ibm microdrive erbij kopen). Op de laagste stand is een foto maar 71 kb groot en kun je er 2610 maken per 256mb (alleen geschikt voor electronische verwerking dus).
* wat cool is: stel dat zelfs met anti rode ogen pre-flash (die hebben veel camera’s) de camera rode ogen detecteert, dan zorgt de nikon red-eye reduction chip ervoor dat de rode ogen alsnog aangepast worden in uhm…normale ogen (lastig bij albino’s trouwens).
* er zit een klein infrarood afstandbedieninkje bij (zo groot als de top van je duim) waarmee je de camera 2 seconden later kunt laten afgaan. Dit is handig bij zelf portretten : je draait het Led display 180 graden zodat je jezelf zit zitten, zorgt dat je er ok uit ziet en drukt dan op de afstandbediening….way cool! er is zelf een carrying case bijgeleverd voor de afstandsbediening!
* de camera heeft 2 banks voor je persoonlijke instellingen, kijk… net zoals climate control links en rechts: een voor B@@ en een voor Esmee!
* mijn 775 had al de multishots optie :16,5,10 achter elkaar e.d. nu is er o.a. ook de Ultra HS optie die maar liefst 100 foto’s achter elkaar klikt, geen idee wanneer ik die ga gebruiken, althans ik heb wel een idee maar die foto’s krijgen jullie nooit te zien ook zit er iets op als de 5 shot buffer: bewaart ie alleen de laatste uit je buffer.
* allerlei interval modus zoals een auto-shot om de pak hem beet 10 seconden, kun je thuis rustig bekijken welk shot van dat feestje het leukste was.
* het schermpje is draaibaar en dat is natuurlijk handig bij zelf portretten maar vooral bij foto’s die je over menigtes heen maakt ( e.g. concerten of grote feesten) e.d. (!)
* je kunt inline croppen e.d. ook soms handig, who needs photoshop, je kunt zelfs de histogrammen bekijken van de foto’s e.d.
* per foto kun je voice memo’s opnemen (20 seconden per memo) en ook afspelen uiteraard zit er een volume knop op, dat zou handig geweest zijn bij de Prambanan tempels in Bali, achteraf heb ik echt geen idee meer wat al die beelden nou voorstellen…
* je kunt per foto automatisch een thumbnail laten mee wegschrijven, ook weer handig als je daarna een website maakt of de foto’s snel wilt tonen in een overzichtje gelijk nadat je de foto’s overpompt (via usb 2.0 op je pc)
* de filmpjes die je kunt opnemen zijn nu echt 640×480 met geluid, echt een wereld van verschil met mijn oude 775 ( dat was een van mijn wensen, ik heb 100 mini filmpjes van onze reis naar Indonesie zonder geluid)
* de Vibration Reduction kun je ook instellen op Ultra, zodat je bijvoorbeeld vanuit een rijdende auto toch nog haarscherpe foto’s kunt maken ( dat zou handig geweest zijn bij onze treinreis vanuit Bandung naar Jogjakarta of onze 8 uur durende rit vanuit Makassar naar Tana Toraja)
* Je kunt foto’s niet alleen protecten maar ook hiden e.d. “zeg ed die foto heb je toch gedeleted he?” ” ja hoor, kijk maar!” *grin*
* nu zit er ook software bij om de movies te bewerken e.d. (quicktime), ook wel handig.
