The 100 Greatest Music Sites

The greatest music sites on the Internet. This is "the essential music sites" list. If you have any addition to this list contact me. (Regularly Updated - by me).

17-1-2008: Since the list is growing and growing I have decided to split it into pieces, this saves some loading time and is also easier to maintain:

music communities
1. Music Communities: Last.Fm, MOG, MyStrands,…

11. social networks and music:

image MySpace Music - Do I need to tell this to anyone? The bands and accompanying music on MySpace is dazzling. You can listen to songs, socialize with the bands or simply just keep track with the current MySpace Music Charts so you can discover e.g. Esmee.
image Multiply Music - This is a little hidden gem on the Internet which I probably shouldn’t share, but searching via Multiply’s music search gives you about any music album you want which you can download or listen to online. You can download here forever.
image Hyves Music - The music section on Hyves is another massive one. You can interact with (new) bands, listen to their songs, become "friends" with them and interact with them via their blogs.

Upcoming Interesting Music Portals

image We7 - Another interesting newer site is We7 which lets you download music from new bands for free, there is no DRM but… the free music has an add at the start of the songs. Let’s keep an eye on this interesting one.
image Jango - Daniel Kaufman from Jango send me an invite, since its still in closed beta. You can start off with filling in an artist you like and it plays music you like based on that artist. Next step is to click on related songs you like more and rate the songs so your taste within the community can become more determined. When you click on a face of a community member you can tune in to his radio channels who probably also adore the music you like.
You then can send an IM directly or afterwards to thank him for listening to his or her radio channel to make instant contacts, discuss music and move into the community, discovering even more music you like. Auto-Music-Community-Building. Oh… shit… this is going to be addictive. I haven’t even scratched the surface here, like customizing who you want to see in the faces panel (online, geography, gender, age), etc… this is almost dating by music preference LOL! GREAT site. (maybe it will become the greatest once out of beta). The adding of artists to your own radio channels is also a big festivity of recognition of names of artists. Anyhow. This will become THE music site, without doubt. It also got 3 invites for interested. So the first 3 to leave me a comment hereunder for an invite will get one (dont forget to leave your e-mail address).
image MeeMix send me an invite for their beta programm. It yet again, allows you a very different approach on discovering music or creating your favorite channels. You can start off with creating a radio channel based on your favorite songs or artists and listens to an excellent list of suggestions often discovering very good music you didn’t know about before, where you can move sliders like "surprise me" and "pulse" to determine the mood you are in. I tried it and it really brought me a lot of songs from all kinds of periods that I didn’t heard before (!) but… which I liked, so where did I develop such a large gap in my music knowledge? This was one of the coolest things on my first short impression: the many unknown songs which I truly liked! Another good thing is the community formed around the songs. You can "meep" a song, share your thoughts but also favoritize a lot of songs from a particular artist at once.Basically: touch a few buttons, sit back and let it play throughout your days, great!

I also got 7 invites for interested. So the first 7 to leave me a comment hereunder for an invitie will get one (dont forget to leave you e-mail address).

Cover Art

image Albumart.org - Just search for an artist and you will get very high quality album covers returned. It’s a simple Amazon mashup, but it does the job.

Music Blogs

image Largehearted boy - is a music blog featuring daily free and legal music downloads as well as news from the worlds of music, literature, and pop culture.
image ShoutMouth - Ben has send me ShoutMouth a newer music site Full of updates, lists and so to see many updates a day to keep your finger on what’s happening in music.
image MusicisArt - Katie left this piece of art in the comments. What an awesome composition!… musicisart is my own personal reflection of the way i feel music, art and words. growing up, i always immersed myself in a pair of headphones and loved to write. my favorite thing to do was make lil journals full of lyrics and quotes adorning the pages with special pictures and glitter, feathers, sequins, jewels? anything that i could use to decorate. the pieces that i shared, whether they were my words or a favorite musician, they became apart of me and it felt important to turn that into a meaningful cartharsis. now years later, it feels nice to have a medium to begin to give back to what its given me.

Other

image this French site lists a lot of resources for free music.
image Indaba Music, Kate Pokorny: "IndabaMusic was launched this February by two Harvard ‘05 alums who were looking for way to empower musicians on a global scale.
They founded their website, which allows its users, a niche community
of musicians and industry professionals, to interact with one another and upload various forms of media. Users can upload tracks that they can then access, edit, mix, and mixdown from any computer in the
world. They offer their usres a free Protools-esque production
console to work within. Users can find new musicians to collaborate
with online and create what is a new form of global/world music.".
The idea behind the site and following/listening to the mixed songs is fabulous. If you don’t know it you should see it.
image Samantha Murphy TV music - Samantha Murphy herself send me her absolutely stunning weekly music show. Every week news artists are starred which are presented by Samantha’s podcast radioshow in deeply colorful and entertaining words whereafter you can listen to songs of the album of the Artist starred together with interviews of the artist.
This site deserves a primary spot on this list, I’m sure that you will return weekly once you’ve seen this site.
For me: the artists she picks are 100% my taste, what a great find!
image PodBop - is a concert database that matches events with mp3s and gives you them in a podcast so you can discover concerts on the go. It’s global and anybody can add an event or
artist mp3 (send in by Taylor).
image SongStuff - John Moxey writes me a summary which is probably better than I can write: "Can I suggest including www.songstuff.com in your list of sites? Songstuff covers songwriting and musicianship, recording and music
technology and the music business, with a broad ranging forum, lots
of articles, glossary, charts, and a new collaboration service ideally suited to pro and semi-pro musicians and producers."

Still to be reviewed: jamglue, uplayme.com, goombah.com, etc…

Simplify Media, http://simplifymedia.com/, is personal web music server that allows you to serve your mp3s directly from your computer over the internet, like Grooveshark. It allows you to play your music collection from any computer using plugins for iTunes and Winamp.

Orb, like Simplify Media and Grooveshark, is another personal web music server. It’s a media server that also supports videos and images and can even feed you live TV stations. In addition, it can access any folder and file that you configure it for making it a web document server.

Oboe is a service from http://mp3tunes.com/ that uploads your mp3’s to their server and allows you to play your music from there. You get unlimited storage, but can only upload 10MB per file if you don’t have a paid account. Paid subscriptions ($40/yr) allow you to upload any size file and also backs up your paid DRM Itunes files. A neat feature of Oboe is Sideload, an extension that allows you to store any mp3 that you find on the web. It’s called Sideload because Mp3tunes grabs the file directly without having to go through your computer. This is a great way to squirrel away music that you run across for later listening.

(Note that MediaMaster has free broadcast streams.)

http://www.jamglue.com/ - online mixing. Create your own tracks and mixes, or remix others.

We do this by keeping track of the music you listen to on your computer, and sending that info to our mothership. There we do fancy math to find out other users who love the same music you love. We tell you about these other users, and you can check out what they are listening to (and hopefully find something new), and you can send them a message.
uPlayMe also allows you to post the music you play on your social network profile or blog. This way friends can see what you play and even hear samples.”
