Upgrading to WordPress 2.1…a How To guide with links

WordPress 2.1 is released and luckily dreamhost already supports it as an auto-upgrade. So what is a wise thing todo for such a major upgrade?

1. I upgraded my sandbox blog and am testing this
2. I first checked the The plugin compatibility listing to see if my current ACTIVE plugins will work (anyways it was a handy list to do some product comparison):

• The admin drop-down menu 1.3 CHECK
• Akismet 1.8.1 CHECK
• Autometa 0.8 CHECK
• Bad Behavior 2.0.5 hmm.. I think I need to go to 2.0.9 for safety… DONE… CHECK
• Blogger Title Fix 1.1 UNKNOWN (not in list), will test this afterwards
• Charcounter 0.0.1 UNKNOWN (not in list), will test this afterwards
• Dagon Design Form Mailer 4.2, CHECK
• Exec-php 3.0, CHECK
• Feedburner Feed Replacement 2.0.2, hmmm…upgrade to 2.2, fiddling with .htaccess…DONE…CHECK
• Google sitemaps 2.7.1, CHECK, Im going to test the beta later
• Gravatar 1.1, CHECK 
• Landing sites 1.3, UNKNOWN (not in list), will test this afterwards (the translated version is however known to work so I suppose this one will too
• Links Page 1.0, CHECK
• Pagebar 1.2, hmmm…there is version 1.3.1 which seems to be required for WordPress 2.1, however I made some changes inside the code of this plugin…ok …filecompare…editor.. update…CHECK
• Related Posts 2.02, CHECK
• Smart Archives 1.5, UNKNOWN (not in list), will test this afterwards
• Spam Karma 2.2 r3, CHECK
• Stumble Info Link 0.2, ITS NOT IN THE LIST BUT…. Since I Wrote it …it will work
• Subscribe to Comments 2.0.4, It says 2.1,…The website seems down so lets put this one on the todolist
• Text Control 2.0b1, CHECK
• Text Filter Suite 1.1, ITS NOT IN THE LIST, let’S disable it for safety…end of pirate day talk
• Ubernyms 2.6, It´s not in the list, hmmm…lets disable it for now
• Weighted Words 1.1, Its not in the list, lets test this afterwards
• Wordcount 0.0.1, CHECK
• WordPress Database Backup 1.8, Hey… I definitely need to upgrade to here. Lets unactive and do this afterwards
• WP Cache 2.0.19, there is now version 2.0.22, but even 2.0.17 hmmm lets upgrade to 2.0.22. (after i did this i read that only version 2.0.22 seems to have a problem and previous version did not…sigh).

3. I checked Google for weblogs that already upgraded to see their experiences (also Technorati):

• Online diary reports no improvemens in speed although the database should have a high performance upgrade
• Nick Star reports its now WAAAY FAST.
• I must remember that the option for the tabbed editor is under my user profile
• I must remember to check my tags to see that they are not depricated
• On QuickOnline tips I found 10 tips you should know about WordPress 2.1

4. I made a full copy of all my source (e.g. adjustments to my template) and a full database backup.

So…now I only have to investigate if WP-Cache 2.0.22 will work normally with WP 2.1 and then we are off, adjust theme settings again and update the plugin compatibility listing above.
